Open Question: Concept house simulation software?
I have a piece of land over which I want to build a house. I would like to do a virtual house on computer first.

Are there softwares or games that are easy to use but also detailed enough for user to design their concept house in 2D and 3D on computer, able to decide floor plans, where walls, windows, doors, lights, bath tubs, cook wares, indoor pool, TV etc etc go? I am not after something like Autodesk AutoCAD which is too complicated and I don’t have the time for it. Just simpler but for a lay person to make their own house and be able to visualise it in 3D, walk through it, get a general feel of what the outcome is going to be like. Any recommended software / game out there that does this? Thanks.

I am in the process of purchasing a home. Part of the purchase involves renovation with brand new carpet throughout the house. I am planning on removing the carpet from the living area and replacing with wood floor. I have been informed by a friend I should look into selling the carpet since it is going to be brand new. Is there any place or process to do this? And if so, how much should I expect for about a 25′x20′ section of carpet. I dont want to just throw away brand new carpet that may be worth something!

When rain and snow have damaged your wood windows, or even the pounding of the heat of the summer sun, you are ready for wooden window restoration.

For a modest investment in the supplies needed for this job, and a few hours work, you can restore each window successfully.

When older houses are left vacant for long periods of time, the owners sometimes neglect them or just forget. Your windows suffer, but this can be taken care of with a little bit of care.

If your wood still looks like it is in good shape, perhaps it just needs cleaning. This can be done with scrapers of different types. Just scrape at the old putty and remove it. If there is broken glass, this will need to be carefully removed, as well. Sometimes sanding is needed. It will make for a much smoother surface for your paint later. The new putty will stick better to fresh, clean wood, so you will need to prepare the bare wood for that with primer. It can be water or oil based.

To order the glass for your window project, you will need to measure it and then add about 1/8 of an inch to the length and the width to allow for clearance. You can order the glass at any local home and building center.

When the primer is dry, install the glass. Start with a bead of putty, very thin in the groove where the glass will be. Then install it. You should use glazing points, strategically placed a couple of inches from the corners and on all sides, for more strength. Then putty around the glass and wood and press down to smooth it out neatly. Scrape off any excess. Now set the window aside for a couple of days to let the putty dry. Next it is time to tape the window glass to protect it from getting paint on it, and paint the wood of the window. And you are done.

And there you have it. You have brought your window back to life with wooden window restoration. It was not difficult and the results are quite pleasing. Now the maintenance will be easy, and you will not need to do this again for a good many years.

Open Question: How can I become a Disney Imagineer?
When I become older I want to work in the film business (Director, Producer) but I know I can’t expect it to happen over night and the odds are slim, but I won’t stop until I die. I have already worked in TV doing my local news (I was 13 and worked in editing and shooting for free). I know if I want to make it the film business I need to take baby steps. I have also always had an interest in designing rides based on movies. Ever since I was 12, after I would watch a movie I would make a miniature ride model and would draw it in depth on paper. Now I am 16 and want to know how I can become a Disney Imagineer in Orlando and how old I must be?

I don’t care for pay, I would work for free if they housed me and fed me when I would travel.

P.S. If I make it in the film business, I will try to become an executive on Disney Channel and get rid of the crap they show now and start showing show that don’t dumb down kids. (the only good show they have is Phineas and Ferb, It tells kids that they can do anything they want if they try and tells them to do something creative instead of watching TV 24/7)

She eventually graduates High school and goes to college. In college she crafts a hugging machine that simulates hugs. The people at the college think she is psychotic so she sees a doctor. And the doctor suggest her being kick out of school. She eventually graduates with a degree in biology. She does her graduate work at a university in Texas. She studies cattle farms and cattle behavior. She designs a dip machine to wash the cattle and also designed a cattle loading part of a slaughter house. She gets her masters in biology and at the end of the movie they tell you the woman earns her PhD in animal behavior and is now teaching at a university and helps educate people on autism.

 Artist Proof: Eric Broers aka Phoneticontrol and I have actually been friends for sometime now. He’s an urban contemporary artist originally from Chicago, who moved to San Francisco in 2006.

Artsprojekt: What inspires your art?

Phoneticontrol: Been watching a lot of old sci-fi lately, Ice Pirates, Tron and the like. Saw a doc on Beautiful Losers and Kieth Haring, that really got the creative juices flowing. Seeing my friends paintings and approaches is inspiring as well.  People like Martin Hsu, Josh Ellingson, 14Bolt, Jay Ryan, Daniel Goffin, Ganyan, Alice Koswara and Robert Hardgrave.

AP: What is the relationship between technique and content in your work?

Pho: My technique has been there as long as I can remember. I built layers on it over time, things evolved naturally. They work hand in hand. The technique supports the content.

AP: Describe your most recent experience of making art.

Pho: Alice and I completed our piece for The Ritter Art House Project in Marin. It’s a public project that raises awareness of pressures faced by homeless and low-income families during the economic downturn. For the exhibition we painted a 4ft by 3 1/2 ft house. We had two weeks to finish the piece including the varnishing.  The project was done with the house constructed in our living room. That forced us to contort into tons of weird yoga positions to complete the details. While we were painting it, we learned a lot about integrating our painting styles.  We really enjoyed the process and are looking for more public art projects in the future. Plus it is for a good cause.

AP: Take us on a guided tour through a day in your life as an artist

Pho: Right now I am painting for upcoming exhibitions in So-Cal, NYC, Germany and a couple here in SF.  Working  on designs for shirts coming to some hangers near you. Alice Koswara and I are collaborating as PHOKOS for exhibits in the future. My “Thought Processor” World Tour is in full swing. At the moment it is on its 4th stop in Seattle. The 5th will be at Myplasticheart in NYC this May. The tour showcases local artists in each city at a local gallery curated by myself. Each selected artist creates their own design on my Thought Processor paper template and a painting to compliment  the resulting collaboration. During the exhibit the series of colorways are available for free download at www.phoneticontrol.com.

Keep the number of flowers to a minimum in the front yard, certainly not more than a dozen. This is logical since spring-flowering bulbs bloom when there is little if any competition from other flowers and only three or four will be enough to attract attention. In addition to using small quantities, use only those that are not too formal in habit such as Narcissus, Grape-hyacinths, Crocus, Snowdrops, and Scillas.

Plant them in a naturalistic manner. The best way to achieve this is to take a handful of bulbs, throw them where they are to be used, and plant each bulb where it falls. A solid line of formal plants like tulips or most hyacinths running around the edge of a shrub border ( called a “shoestring planting” by professionals) is unattractive and inexcusable.

Flowers in Boundary Planting

One other place where you might wink at the rule prohibiting flowers in the public area is off at the sides of the property where perhaps a boundary planting is located. Here you might even include a few low growing and soft colored annuals or perennials as well as some spring-flowering bulbs.

The use of flowers is basically wrong because you must remember that the first and most important object of the public area planting is to focus the attention of the observer on your home. This cannot be accomplished if there are bright spots of color here and there to attract their attention.

Inspect Other Landscaping

Test this statement when walking or riding past certain homes where a spectacular flower bed or some other bright colored feature inadvertently draws your attention to it. Probably you will not be able to remember what kind of a house it was! In other words, from the landscaping angle the correct place for flowers is in the backyard, which will be discussed in a later chapter. Except for the few situations above described, there is no excuse for the use of flowers in the public area.
